Rebirth to 80's to Have a Good Life

Chapter 3: Our Family Moved Out Part 2

Grandma Su, seeing that Su Changrong was still protecting her, became so angry that she gritted her teeth and said, "Alright, you've grown up and become disobedient, huh? You don't even bother to teach your child. If I had known this, I wouldn't have given birth to you. I would have just thrown you into a chamber pot and drowned you!"

Su Changrong, looking exhausted, rubbed his face vigorously and said, "Mom, what did Minzi do wrong? Why do you always want to hit her?"

Li Yulan walked over and sneered, "Big brother, we should ask sister-in-law about this. We don't even have enough food to eat, and yet Minzi gets her own separate meal. She works hard to study, but do we not work hard? Mom just said a few words, and Minzi started shouting at her."

Sun Qiufang, listening to this attempt to sow discord, had her eyes turn red. She said, "Li Yulan, don't talk nonsense. Do you eat any less food on the table? Why should you be allowed to eat while my daughter gets scolded? You didn't mention that you specially boiled egg for Can Can. Why don't you bring that up?"

"Can she be compared to Can Can?" Grandma Su interrupted and said, "She's a girl and still wants to eat eggs. She shouldn't have gone to the doctor a few days ago. The girl's life is cheap. She can get well by herself, but she has to spend that money. If you have the ability, give birth to a son, and I'll let your son eat eggs."

"Mom, please stop," Su Changrong said, his face contorted with pain. He had heard these words too many times over the years, and each time, it hurt even more.

Sun Qiufang's face turned pale, and tears streamed down her face. She cried, "Don't talk about having a son. In my whole life, Minzi is my only daughter, and even if I could have a son, I wouldn't!"

"You won't have a son? Then don't compare yourself to the second son's family!" Grandma Su spat vehemently on the ground.

Su Min, looking at her in this state, felt an intense hatred. She took a deep breath and, holding back her anger, said, "Grandma, you say girls are worthless, but aren't you a girl too? Are you saying you're worthless as well? You look down on girls, but why don't you look down on yourself?"

"You little brat, I'll have to beat you to death!" Grandma Su's face turned pale as she picked up a broom and went over to strike.

This time, Su Changrong didn't dare to intervene. He could only hold his wife and daughter, enduring the blows and insults.

Su Min struggled in her parents' arms, desperately trying to break free and confront the old lady. She couldn't stand living like this anymore. Even if she died, she didn't want to endure the same life she had in her previous life. Why could they live so well while her family had to suffer?

It took many hits before Su Changfu managed to pull Grandma Su away.

Once the old lady was gone, Su Changrong released his wife and daughter.

Su Min stepped out of Sun Qiufang's embrace and pulled Su Changrong, crying, "Dad, I beg you, let's move away. Let's go out and beg for food. I don't want to live like this anymore."

Sun Qiufang, seeing her daughter in this state, was overwhelmed with sadness. She walked over and embraced her daughter, saying, "Changrong, I'll take our daughter back to my mother's house for a few days."

Upon hearing this, Old Su angrily retorted, "Now is the busy farming season. Why are you going back to your mother's house? No one will do the work at home."

Sun Qiufang was infuriated. She looked at Su Changrong, who had yet to make a decision, and at her daughter, whose eyes were filled with despair. Her heart ached like stab by a knife. Should they really continue to stay in this house?

While she was hesitating, Su Min tugged at her sleeve.

"Mom, should we go? If Dad won't come, let's go by ourselves, okay? What if Grandma really tries to harm me? I can't bear to see you suffer from illness and poverty."

Su Changrong felt a pang of pain when he heard this. He reached out and took his daughter's hand. "Our family will move out."

Upon hearing this, Su Min was shocked. She looked at Su Changrong and asked, "Dad, are you serious?"

"Yes." Su Changrong nodded.

He could endure being wronged, but he couldn't bear to see his child suffer.

"Changrong, what do you mean by this?" Old Su glared at his eldest son with anger in his eyes.

Grandma Su chimed in, "Exactly, we were living just fine. Why move out? There's no spare space for you in our family."

Su Changrong also understood that he would have nothing if he moved out, but seeing his daughter and wife in such a state, he felt that he had to leave for their sake. "I'll go out and build a thatched shelter myself."

"What about the land at home? Changfu is going to work in the town, and I can't do it alone."

Su Min realized that her parents were being taken advantage of and worried that her father might be confused for a moment. She quickly said, "Of course, each family should manage their own land. The three of us in our family should each have our own share of the land. You can cultivate your portion by yourselves, it is impossible for my parents to support you."

She made her point very clear, and Li Yulan suddenly felt a bit guilty. She had wanted the eldest family to move out while still farming the land, but she didn't expect this girl to be so straightforward.

Originally, Su Changrong thought it didn't matter who cultivated the land as long as there was a harvest and food at home. But now, after hearing his daughter's words, he felt it wasn't right to continue like this. Changfu was also a family man now; why should he and his wife support his family?

Sun Qiufang was even more unwilling. She had swallowed her anger for all these years, mainly because she hadn't given birth to a son for the Su family, and even if she want, she couldn't give birth anymore. Now that they were moving out to live on their own, whether or not they had a son was none of their concern, and they shouldn't be expected to support others.

She said, "We're moving out, and our land should be divided accordingly. Each family should be self-sufficient."

"That won't work. Yulan can't manage it all by herself. How will we get our harvest in the future?" Grandma Su began calculating as well. With the eldest son's family moving out, the annual harvest wouldn't be shared with them anymore. If the second family couldn't cultivate all the land, there would be no harvest. How would they save money for the future? They needed money for their grandson's education and his future marriage. It was all about money.

Su Changrong felt increasingly depressed when he heard that every word was said for the sake of the second son Changfu and his family. They had all lived together, hadn't they noticed? They could see the old man's favoritism towards his grandson, but he didn't expect the division to be so clear in the old lady's calculations.
